Though it has become difficult to save the animal species which are on the verge of extinction, scientists have come up with a spectacular idea to show concern to such fellow beings.
A complete encyclopedia which will have all information about so far known bio diverse living beings. This is supposed to comprise of 1.8 million species discovered, including animals, plants and other living organisms.
According to the plans, researchers will collect each and every bit of information about life on earth for the coming 10 years. This will be done by creating bots to crawl the ocean of information in the internet to gather information regarding every living being.
The collective data will be checked by experts and modified to form a web page for each of the 1.8 million species. This huge web site will be maintained at Encyclopedia Of Life and will be available for any info seeker who has an internet connection.
You can find a few demo pages at EOL.
The project has been launched by a consortium including the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC, the Field Museum in Chicago and Harvard University. The Natural History Museum in London and Royal Botanic Garden at Kew are to make vast collections of historic records available through the encyclopedia.
This project will provide us with a platform for discussing the climate variations and bio diversities. I wonder once this project goes live our knowledge about living species will reach a higher level and will lead us to think of different nick names for pals. Better names than monkey and donkey :-P. Huh..
