Horlicks
Mar 7th, 2007 by MadV
Yesterday afternoon when I was getting bored I thought of doing some research in malt beverages and Energy Drinks. No rewards for guesses about my favorite malt drink, Horlicks :-D.
Nowadays Wikipedia has become the primary choice for valid and correct information about anything. Hence before googling I thought of reading about Horlicks from wiki. And this is what it said:
Horlicks is the name of a company and a malted milk hot drink claimed to promote sleep when drunk at bedtime. It is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline in the United Kingdom, India and Jamaica.
Huh.. “promote sleep when drunk at bed time”. That was an astonishing info for me. In India it is considered to be a health drink. And they claim to make kids grow “Taller, Stronger, Sharper“. They also say that they have proven it clinically [unlike other malt drink (Complan)'s claim].
A recent ad of Horlicks says “Exams ka bhoot ko bhagao”. Huh.. how can some drink that promotes sleep help you to score good marks during exam time? Doesnt both contradict? Or is it like in India it is a health drink and in UK it is a sleep promoter?
In India we consider Horlicks to be a prestigious health drink which is good for both kids and elder people. And has got a flavour which is everyone’e favorite. Also now varied flavours like chocolate, vanilla etc are also launched. Addtion to that, to serve different class of individuals, GSK has launched different variants of horlicks like Junior Horlicks (for kids from age 2-5), Mother’s horlicks [for pregnant women and breast feeding mothers], Horlicks Lite [sugar free energising drink for elders] etc.
On the contrary wiki says in UK it is used as a slang to define a mess. On consulting with Veeran I got to know about it more. The formulation of both horlicks’ are different. Hence though the same brand, they serve different purposes - In India as a health drink and in UK as sleep promoter.
Wake up Horlicks sellers and manufacturers. Atleast reorder the content of wiki so that it wont hurt Horlicks lovers :-D.
