Itz Onam Again
Sep 15th, 2005 by MadV
Yah itz Onam.. The festival of Kerala. My Onam was in Hyd only. Had a sadya, from Infy food court which was okie. I was thinking about my past Onams through out the day. We used to go to our native place which is in a village in Palghat. All my cousins used to come there. We used to have a great time playing cards, cricket, etc and making fun of each other. We used to have food together. And for us having food was like a competetion item and I was the loser coz I eat very slowly :-(. On Thiruvonam our moms used to wake us up early so that we can attend all the poojas in the temple. And after that ‘neerattu’ in the ‘ambalakkulam’. And we are supposed to wear wet clothes (’eeran’) inside the temple coz only then we are ’shudham’. And the poojas.. Our Krishna used to look wonderful on that day coz there will be lot of garlands adorning him. And then is the time for breakfast. ‘Pazham nurukku’ used to be the item on demand. Then again time for playing. By 12 we’ll stop all the activities that we were doing and each and everyone will start visiting kitchen. Will taste everything before the real sadya starts. And then starts the sadya. Kaalan. Olan, Aviyal, pulinchi, inchithairu, sambhar, varathupperi, chena varuthathu, paayasam, etc etc.. (My mouth is getting wet now).
Then comes the sad part. Itz time to leave. All have got schools, colleges, jobs, etc etc.. And only my ‘ammamma’ will be left. Evereyone leaves to different different places. I wave my hands as long as ammamma is visible. I could see a bright face turning gloomy.
Hmmm.. itz 6:54. Thank God that my mom is with my ammamma today. She wont have felt that sad. I never thought during last Onam that I wont be there for the next Onam. Now I cant keep thinking where will I be for next Onam.

A very Happy Onam to u and ur family..
Don’t we all miss huge, the village onam days? Though I hadn’t one for real, for I had no village connections, I do long for those memories. Tips : switch off the telly, take a trip to some village and distribute sarkaravaratti for free.
@Jithu: Athu chumma oru jaadaykkayirunnu.
@Josh: Yah you can visit our village. You are most welcome. You dont need to bring anything. But you can go back with a pleasant and peaceful mind.
You missed the “Pookalam”, “Thumba Poov”, “Onathappan” and “Maveli”
Happy Onam !!
I too miss Onam. Feeling very home sick!
@ Rajesh && Adarsh:
Kuch paane keliye kuch khona padtha hein ;-).
That’ just what I can’t accept. I’m having to chose between such irreplaceables as Onam, Home, Friends on the one hand and such uninteresting things as studies, projects on the other. I really miss what I call ‘the best days of my life’.
Oruvattom Koodi…
