Little known facts behind choosing a pseudo name
May 4th, 2007 by MadV
OS or Operating Systems was one of the course subjects in our semester IV. And we had a geeky lecturer who wanted to improve our GK on OS. Purposely he used to give strange assignments that included questions like “what is the code name for Windows 98″.
Those were the days when Wiki was not familiar. And google used to be our best pal. Like any other engineering class room, ours also had some acting-to-be-brillaint guys. They used to find out the answers in the next break and will start distributing the gyan to ungyanis to increase their popularity in the class. Huh..
Though unsuccessful in the assignments it did make us realise that there is something called code name for every big project. For eg. Windows Vista was code named as Long Horn.
And today time pass search topic included Microsoft code names and as a result some facts flashed on my monitor which I thought would be informational to you as well.
Check out what wiki has to say on Microsoft Code Names:
Code Name: Whistler ; Release: Windows XP; Reason: Named after Whistler, British Columbia, where design retreats were held.
Code Name: Longhorn ; Release: Windows Vista ; Reason: Named after the Longhorn Bar in the Whistler-Blackcomb resort; initially planned as an “interim release” between “Whistler” and “Blackcomb” (which is now “Vienna”).
Code Name: Blackcomb, Vienna; Release: Undecided; Reason: Named after the Whistler-Blackcomb resort.
Isnt this quite funny? A little more funny facts can be found about commercial code naming in computer industry in wiki.
To add as a foot note, from the Windows Vista information available and Windows Vista reviews it seems that if you are happy with your Windows XP with SP2, you dont need to upgrade to Windows Vista.
Free software Foundation has come up with something called Bad Vista to make people aware of free softwares and to demote Windows Vista. [UNIX / LINUX]
